99.99% (1) Recognition Accuracy. PFU Introduces PaperStream AI, The Next Chapter of Intelligent Document Capture
Powered by proprietary technology from the world’s No. 1 (2) scanner manufacturer, enhancing business efficiency
PFU Limited, a Ricoh company and leader in document scanning solutions, today announced the release of PaperStream AI(3), a new generation to its flagship document capture software PaperStream Capture Pro, and PaperStream Capture Pro Premium for RICOH fi and SP Series of business-use image scanners(4), which hold the No.1 (2) global market share. The launch of the service has enabled a smoother end-to-end workflow from scanning to data utilization.
As organizations face increasing volumes of documents and growing demands for faster, more accurate processing, manual and fragmented workflows have become a bottleneck. PaperStream AI addresses these challenges by automatically recognizing diverse document formats from the first scan and leveraging AI to reduce manual setup, verification effort, and processing time.
By combining intelligent recognition with adaptive automation, PaperStream AI enables organizations to transform documents into actionable data through automation from input to insight. With its simple and intuitive operation, the platform standardizes document processing across departments and use cases, reducing manual effort, minimizing errors, and improving business outcomes.
Features
1. Automatic recognition of diverse document formats, ready to use from the first scan
PaperStream AI automatically recognizes and processes various document formats without manual setup, enabling immediate use from the very first scan. A wide range of business documents are supported, including invoices, purchase orders, receipts, medical forms, and other industry-specific records, enabling organizations across finance, healthcare, public services, and manufacturing to streamline workflows with simple, intuitive document processing.
By continuously learning from user feedback, the system improves recognition accuracy over time while preserving original documents’ logical structure, allowing users to benefit from smarter recognition and AI-ready data without disrupting existing workflows.
2. Achieving 99.99% (1) recognition accuracy through PFU technology combined with generative AI
PaperStream AI achieves a high recognition accuracy of 99.99% (1) by combining full-document structural analysis with high-precision character recognition, integrated and interpreted using generative AI.
Two distinct sources of information—the results of structural and contextual analysis of the entire document, and the character recognition results generated by PFU’s proprietary OCR engine—are cross-referenced with the document image using generative AI. By interpreting and complementing these inputs, the system improves the accuracy of data extraction and determines the final recognition result, while maintaining consistently high recognition accuracy.
3. End-to-end automation from scanning to data utilization
Powered by AI, PaperStream AI streamlines the flow of data from capture to downstream business applications by enabling processing and verification tasks to run in parallel. This integrated approach keeps workflows uninterrupted, reducing errors and the need for rework.
As a result, organizations can achieve up to 98% (5) faster turnaround and significantly higher productivity across document-driven processes compared to traditional cloud-based AI OCR services.
4. Operational visibility and control through an intuitive dashboard
PaperStream AI provides a centralized dashboard that gives users clear visibility into system usage, such as processing status, and operational performance. This enables precise control and data-driven management, helping organizations identify optimization opportunities and continuously improve workflow and process design.
5. Lower adoption barriers with flexible, scalable usage plans
PaperStream AI automatically recognizes documents, significantly lowering the entry barrier to adoption regardless of document volume or complexity. With phased, usage-based plans, organizations can begin deployment at the departmental level and seamlessly expand to a company-wide implementation. This solution supports enterprise and departmental deployments, accommodating varying workloads across different teams and business units. The platform enables the creation of unified, intelligent workflows that span the entire organization, integrating smoothly with existing backend systems and supporting consistent operations across teams and business units.

Notes
- (1) Based on verification using PFU-defined standard forms. Recognition accuracy was measured using images scanned at 300 dpi in full colour. It is calculated based on a comparison between PaperStream AI recognition results following the training process and reference data prepared by PFU. Certain characters (such as spaces, commas and line breaks) are excluded from the evaluation.
- (2) The data is based on the market share of document scanners. The market share data for Japan and North America is based on the records of 2024 collected by KEYPOINT INTELLIGENCE (Info Trends) for 6 segments of document scanners excluding Mobile/Micro scanners. Collected records are mainly about document scanners with a speed of more than 8ppm. The market share data for Europe is based on the records of 2024 collected by infoSource in Western Europe (including Turkey and Greece).
- (3) A valid license for PaperStream Capture Pro or PaperStream Capture Pro Premium in versions later than 6.0.0 is required to use PaperStream AI.
- (4) PaperStream Capture Pro and PaperStream Capture Pro Premium are designed to work with TWAIN-compatible scanners that adhere to TWAIN specifications version 2.3 or newer. However, some third-party scanner TWAIN drivers may not fully comply with this standard and could encounter compatibility issues and/or limited functionality. We recommend using the trial/evaluation version of the software to test your scanners and verify performance.
- (5) Based on verification conducted by PFU using A4 invoice documents (printed text) scanned at 300 dpi in full colour. OCR processing time was measured from the start of recognition processing to completion by PaperStream AI. Scanning, verification and correction times are estimated based on typical operational assumptions. Actual time savings may vary depending on document content, workflow and operating environment.
